NEW CASTLE, Ind. (June 19, 2009) The management team for Ameriana Bank Friday had the opportunity to watch a debate by the leadership of Shenandoah High School's FFA. The FFA officers presented the debate they prepared for the state Agriculture Issues Forum, an FFA competition in Indianapolis.
Six young women lined the front of the Ameriana board room as they presented a balanced debate about gender equality in agriculture. Following the presentation, several members of Ameriana's management asked the FFA officers questions about other facts the young women might have found during their research to further prepare them for the state competition.
"These young women put together an excellent presentation," said Jerry Gassen, Ameriana President and CEO. "They impressed our leadership team with their professionalism, knowledge and passion. All of us here at Ameriana wish them the best of luck in their competition in Indianapolis."
Steve Hickey, the FFA adviser at NCCHS said he has been surprised to find more and more females joining FFA. Hickey said some of the young women presenting to Ameriana today planned not to be involved in agricultural careers, they joined the organization to gain leadership skills.
The SHS FFA will present at the state level on June 15 in Indianapolis and hope to advance to the national level. The SHS FFA has advanced to the national competition seven of the last nine years, has placed in the top five four times and has won the national competition once.
